The SYGNIS Approach

The need for innovative therapies to treat diseases of the central nervous system is immense – not only from the patient’s perspective, but also from the family’s, society’s and health system’s point of view.
In her research and drug development, SYGNIS follows an approach which is both novel and holistic. That is, its drug candidates aim at addressing not only acute therapeutic needs, but also target the long-term regeneration of damaged nervous tissue. SYGNIS termed this approach “neurotherapeutic”.

Protection and Reconstitution of Neuronal Networks

The main objective of this therapy is to reduce the loss of neurons by slowing down or even stopping the pathological processes which induce neuronal cell death. This results in reduced damage of the nervous tissue. The second major goal of this therapeutic approach is to boost the regeneration of neurons in the central nervous system, by stimulating the generation of new neurons. In addition to these neuroprotective and neuroregenerative aspects of the Sygnis drugs, they also support and induce the connection of neurons to functional neuronal networks, thereby improving the ability of intact brain areas to take over the functions of injured areas, which is subsumed under the term neuronal plasticity.
