A damage to the spinal cord (SCI, spinal cord injury) which interrupts communication of the brain with body regions below the site of injury results in dramatic, usually lifelong disability. Spinal cord injuries are predominantly caused by accidents. After the primary injury to the spinal cord, a cascade of events leads to progressive loss of tissue which may further worsen the patient’s prognosis.
SYGNIS has shown in pre-clinical studies that AX200 can counteract the processes leading to neuronal cell death. In addition, the compound has demonstrated a profound ability to foster neuronal regeneration and to support neuronal plasticity which facilitates functional recovery after SCI.
SYGNIS has established proof of concept for AX200 in in vivo models of SCI and has created considerable pre-clinical data packages. In addition SYGNIS received Orphan Drug Designation from the European Commission for AX200 in the treatment of spinal cord injury. SYGNIS is seeking partners to advance AX200 into clinical development in this orphan indication.
